Generic Product FAQ's
Generic products are those which are equivalent to the brand name
product in terms of safety, route of administration, quality, performance
and the use which is intended from the product. While it is been
noted that the performance is same as brand name product, generic
products are available for much lesser.
Generic means ‘a replica of the original product whose patent
has expired’.
Generics contain the same present ingredients in the same concentration
as in the branded drug. Generic products come to market only after
the patents of the branded drugs has expired.
It is a known fact that sometimes even the doctors prescribe generic
products over the brand name drug.
Some of the frequently asked questions regarding
generic products are:
Are generic drugs safe?
Generic products are manufactured under the strict guidelines of
FDA. They go through the same testing as the branded product, as
the generic has to replace the branded drug and to ensure that the
drugs are interchangeable. The FDA is known to work with the companies
to meet the requirements of quality, strength, identity, purity
and potency.
Are generic equivalents absorbed and used
in the body the same way as the branded drug?
Yes, though the products need close monitoring on the reaction of
the blood levels. The drugs which are closely studied are blood
thinners, asthma drugs, anticonvulsants and thyroid drugs.
After investigating this concern there have been no problems regarding
this issue with the use generic drugs in the human body.
Is the quality same?
Yes, since both the products have to go through the same requirements
put forward by FDA. To gain the approval from FDA the product has
to go through and should:
- Be equivalent therapeutically.
- Have the same active ingredients as the branded drug.
- Be same in terms of dosage form and strength.
Why are generic drugs priced at a lower
price?
New drugs are developed under patent protection. The patent excludes
others from selling the drug while the patent has effect. It is
only when the patent expires, is when the manufacturers can make
the generic drugs and sell them.
With the competition only increasing, the generic manufacturers
lower R&D costs and reduce the time spent on advertising and
marketing
Are the branded drugs and their generic
equivalents same?
The treatment of the illness by the generic is same, in terms of
effectiveness.
Are generics available for all drugs?
No, the newest drugs which have been approved by FDA do not have
their generic counterparts.
Thus, generic products work with the same amount of efficiency
as the branded drug. With the cost of the drug being much less,
it’s available to more people to treat illnesses.
Product Info
State the difference between a generic and brand
name drug?
The difference lies only in the name and price. The products are
known to contain the same ingredients. A generic drug is called
by its chemical name, whereas the manufacturer assigns a brand name.
Standard practice and most state laws require that a generic drug
be generically equivalent to its brand-name counterpart. That is,
it must contain the same active ingredients, strength and dosage
form – pill, liquid or injection. The generic drug should
be same chemically and have the same medical effect. The generic
drug should be therapeutically equivalent.
What is the reason behind generic medicines being
so cheap?
These pills are manufactured by pharmaceutical companies which
are often located and based in India. These companies do not invest
in research and development into new drugs; they only copy the designs
of the existing drugs. These companies also do not pay for television
or radio advertising; the drugs they are selling have been on the
market for usually a decade or more and do not need additional advertising.
Why is there such a difference in appearance,
from the pills received by you and the brand name? Even the name
printed on the pill is different?
The manufacturers of generic drugs are not allowed to use the brand
names as in this case they will be accused of the copyright infringement.
The generic pills contain the same active ingredients as the branded
pills. The reason holds the same for its appearance.
What’s the difference between “Soft”
and “Regular” tabs?
The difference lies in the mechanism and zone of absorption. The
soft tabs get dissolved under the tongue and get absorbed directly
into the bloodstream. Thus the effect felt is much quicker. While
taking regular tabs, you are not allowed to take alcohol and food
rich in fat content.
